CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR YOUTH-LED ORGANIZATIONS TO JOIN NEW COHORT

Znak-transpThe Open Society Foundations Youth Exchange is launching the Change makers Cohort, a new cohort for 5-10 promising youth-led organizations that are existing or potential Open Society partners.. The idea for a cohort originated from discussions with the network since 2013 about the challenges of supporting strong youth-led partners and has been designed through a series of workshops and conversations with programs and foundations across the network in 2014. The Change makers Cohort is envisioned as both a space to build the capacity of promising youth-led formal and informal organizations through training and peer-learning opportunities, and also a space for Open Society colleagues to collaborate with each other and with young people.

Cohort members will meet 4-5 times a year in person in a rotating location (ideally some of these meetings will be where cohort members are working). At the first meeting, the Youth Exchange will work with nominating Open Society programs and the cohort members to identify key training needs. In partnership with CEU’s School of Public Policy “Skills for Impact” program, the Youth Exchange will develop a training curriculum to accompany each in-person meeting.

The heart of the cohort, however, is peer-to-peer learning, and the Youth Exchange will also work with the full cohort to identify ways to network and share best practices and ideas with other cohort members through both in-person and virtual meetings and conversations. Between in-person meetings, the Youth Exchange will work with each cohort member to identify additional opportunities for learning including mentorships, individual training opportunities in their respective region, conferences, and site visits to other cohort members or other organizations.

We also see this as an opportunity to explore the challenges and opportunities that face youth-led organizations, particularly around issues of long-term sustainability and effective programming. We also hope that this space gives us the opportunity to explore best practices in supporting youth-led organizations and movements (even outside of the formal space) that might also inform our broader work beyond support for youth. For this reason we ask that all nominating programs or foundations commit some time and attention to the cohort so that we can create a space of learning among Open Society colleagues.

The Youth Exchange will cover all costs for the cohort including travel for participants of the cohort, development of training material as needed, and other to-be-determined costs as the program develops. We ask that Open Society programs/foundations only contribute the costs for staff to attend cohort meetings, although we can discuss this in a case-by-case basis as needed. The Youth Exchange will also have modest funds available through the cohort to support co-funded grants or other operational costs to the organizations in discussion with programs/foundations.

As a final note, if you do not have an organization that you would like to nominate, but would like to learn more about the cohort now or as it develops, please reach to Maryanne or Alex with questions.

Timeline for Nominations and Selections

April 15-May 15: Nominations Open

May 15-July 15: Changemakers Cohort is Selected (Includes Follow-up Conversations with Nominators)

Early August – Cohort announced to the network

September 12-14 – First Meeting of Changemakers Cohort in Istanbul

Criteria for Nomination

For Nominating Programs/Foundations

  • Any national or regional foundation or thematic program may nominate an organization. Joint nominations between a foundation and a thematic program are highly encouraged.
  • We ask that nominating programs and foundations maintain an active relationship with the organization that they are nominating through their time with the cohort. In the nomination form, we note some ways that you might propose engaging with the organization you nominate.

For Organizations

  • We are seeking youth-led organizations that have a leader or group of organizers that is/are aged roughly between 15-35 years.
  • Programs/foundations can nominate either a formally registered youth organization or a non-formal youth organization (as long as there is some structure/members of the organization who could attend cohort meetings).
  • This year, the cohort will be global so there are no geographic restrictions.
  • Ideally, organizations will have had a relationship of some sort (through either direct or indirect funding, consultations, etc.) with the nominating program/foundation for at least one year.
  • 1-2 members of the organization must attend each cohort meeting.

The purpose of the cohort is to support the organization itself, and not individual leaders. We suggest that you consider this dynamic when deciding which organizations to nominate.
